Users review: Joel (Jim Carrey) is pretty milquetoast guy who meets a free spirit Clementine (Kate Winslet), and they become lovers. However, they are messy breakup and Clementine go business called holes, Inc, where she has all her memories of Joel erased. Not wanting to be left out, Joel also goes to memory erased. But soon after it begins, Joel realizes that he wants to keep the memory of Clementine, so he tries to reverse process.Well, if you are familiar with Kaufman's work, then you know what you get yourself. This is just so weird if not weirder than his previous work, John Malkovich. I knew what I was getting myself into, but 90% of the movie I said to myself what the hell is going on?, But in a good way. It opens with Joel call in sick to work and go to another train bound for Montauk. He met with Clementine and they hit it off. Now this film for 15 minutes and then came out of nowhere opening credit sequence. I'll admit that I thought it would be different, but I'm glad it's the way it is, the film is 80% of the time in Joel's head.If think you know Carrie, think again. This film is his best performance, better than Majestic, Truman Show and all its comedic roles (which is what I want). Just look at his face in the second we see, we feel his pain, so how we feel his joy, shame and hatred. Just awesome spectacle of him and Winslet was great as the free spirit who never seems satisfied. The supporting cast all work well in their small but important roles. Oscar nominations and Winslet (fingers crossed) Carrey. But if I can bet any money on Oscar nominations it will obviously be written, what a mess, but nicely built. You think to yourself, is that the place is really necessary? Then ten minutes later you think to yourself how brilliant it was, thats pretty crazy, give me what hes smoking type of writing. Charlie Kaufman's writing is always clever, but this time hes been one upped by doing something both bizarre and emotionally engaging. It seemed like his previous films was smart for the sake of wisdom, but Eternal Sunshine manages to dazzle you with its originality and poignancy. The fact that this film was able to complete such a profound loss, emotional affection and the hopes such a self-consciously stylized package illustrates the incredible talent of the people behind it.Michel Gondry use of bright colors and fast movement of the camera give the film include the very first hand feel. Constant use the handy cam is very involved in all of the public, and I think this is exactly what is needed in such a personal film. His work is incredible dream sequences as well. He decides to spend more practical effects than what we see today with computers. Eternal Sunshine is a tragic, yet beautiful film that sits on top of my list of the best of 2004.
